COMPOUNDING

Compounding is a method of creating personalized medicine. This can be done for many reasons including a child who is unable to swallow pills, a patient with an allergy, or simply, if mass-produced medications are not working for a patient. Compounding provides a solution to these problems.

As a compounding pharmacy, we will work with your prescriber to create a customized solution for your specific needs. Compounding enables pharmacists to overcome some of health care’s top challenges.

IS COMPOUNDING SAFE?

Compounding is an integral part of a pharmacy, and this technique has been used since the beginning of the profession. One of the primary reasons for compound medications is because unavailability of a specific dosage form or strength. Thus, compounding helps provide tailored medication as needed by the patient. To ensure the quality of the medication and the safety of the patient, all the pharmacies making compounds have to follow the rigorous rules and regulations of the FDA. Moreover, compounding is regulated by state boards of pharmacy.

Patient safety is and always will be our first priority, and our pharmacy always ensures we follow all the regulations and safe practices for our compounds.

WHAT KIND OF PRESCRIPTIONS CAN BE COMPOUNDED?

Most of the prescriptions needing a unique dosage or strengths can be compounded. The primary goal of compounding is to tailor the medication as per the patient’s needs to ensure ease of use and optimum adherence. We can compound topicals, solutions, lozenges (troches), suppositories, and oral rinses. Additionally, compounding applications can include pain management, dermatology, pediatrics, veterinary, and many more. Contact our pharmacist today to know more!

IS COMPOUNDING EXPENSIVE?

Compounding cost depends on the type of dosage form and equipment required, plus the time spent researching and preparing the medication. Fortunately, we have access to pure-grade quality chemicals which help lower overall costs and allow us to be very competitive with commercially manufactured products. Please see the next question to understand if your compounds can be covered by insurance to lower your cost to a minimum!

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER COMPOUNDED MEDICATIONS?

Most insurance plans allow for the patient to be reimbursed by sending in claims forms. While you may be paying a pharmacy directly for a compounded prescription, most insurance plans should cover the final cost. You can ask us to supply you with a form when you pick up your compounded medication.
